One person died in a crash on southbound Interstate 95 in Chesterfield County early Wednesday morning. The crash involved three vehicles, including a tractor-trailer.
The incident happened around 4:05 a.m. just north of exit 58. Virginia State Police say the driver of the Saturn struck a woman driving a Nissan Altima head-on.
The tractor-trailer came upon the crash and tried to avoid hitting the two cars. The driver of the tractor-trailer was then forced to make an evasive maneuver, which caused it to jackknife into the jersey wall. The 18-wheeler went into the northbound lanes.
The driver of the Saturn – 20-year-old Jailyn Richad Allred,of Chester – died at the hospital.
The other driver was transported to Southside Regional Medical Center with serious injuries. The driver of the tractor-trailer was also transported to the hospital with minor injuries.
All southbound lanes have reopened. However, the left lane is still closed on the northbound side. All lanes on Interstate 95 North were closed earlier.
Both Chesterfield and Colonial Heights fire departments cleaned up the fuel spill as a result of the crash.
The crash is under investigation.
