The LGBT Democrats of Virginia and the Liberal Women of Chesterfield County and Beyond (LWCC) are co-sponsoring a special showing of the critically acclaimed movie Boy Erased at the Criterion Cinemas at Movieland, 1331 N. Boulevard, Richmond, 23230 on Tuesday November 20 at 6:30pm. This event sold out in 5 days. A discussion including Delegate Patrick Hope (D-HD47), and local LGBT activist and conversion “therapy” survivor, Adam Trimmer, will also occur.
The film is an adaptation of Garrard Conley’s 2016 memoir about a young man, Jared Eamons (played by Lucas Hedges) who, after telling his parents he is gay, undergoes so-called “conversion therapy”. The film reveals the emotional and physical abuse experienced by Jared and others who receive this so-called “therapy.”
Research shows that children and adolescents who undergo conversion “therapy” are eight times more likely to commit suicide and six times more likely to become depressed. Further, this “therapy” has been denounced by numerous prominent national professional health associations including the American Medical Association, the American Psychological Association, and the American Academy of Pediatrics, among many others, and it has been banned by 13 states.
Maggie Sacra, chairperson of the LGBT Democrats of Virginia said, “The majority of Virginians support fairness for all LGBT+ citizens and are against the unethical attempt to harm LGBT+ youth through these ineffective and detrimental practices. We hope to persuadeprofessional organizations to regulate this egregious practice here in Virginia, and hope one day to see theabolition of this practice across the country.”
Carol Schall, one of the leaders of LWCC and a plaintiff in Virginia’s Marriage Equality Court Case in 2014 said, “LWCC stands for expanding civil rights for all people, including Virginia’s LGBTQ Citizens. We have members who are LGBTQ or have LGBTQ family. We are delighted to work with the LGBT Democrats of Virginia to support candidates who support fairness and safety.”
