The following is a release from the Spanberger campaign in reference to her opponent Dave Brat’s comments on Trump’s Helsinki summit. You may have missed Brat’s comments blaming Obama for Trump not blaming Russia for interfering in United States elections.

GLEN ALLEN, VA — Abigail Spanberger, Democratic nominee for Virginia’s 7th Congressional District, released the following statement today in response to Congressman Brat’s remarks on President Trump’s meeting and press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki:

“Yesterday, I was disturbed to watch our President side with Russia over our own intelligence community and downplay the threat of their attacks on our democracy. Today, I am truly disappointed that in light of one of the most shocking press conferences in American history, Congressman Dave Brat appears to have chosen his party allegiance over our country.

“Congressman Brat has chosen not to call out Russia for their cyber warfare, and he has chosen instead to mislead voters about our nation’s longtime understanding of the threat posed by Russia. As a former CIA officer, I know firsthand the threat Russia has and continues to pose to our national security, and elected leaders and presidents from both parties have long known and treated Russia as a hostile adversary – until now.

“Congressman Brat may not be privy to all the national security assessments related to Russia and President Vladimir Putin, but that’s not an excuse for playing politics while our country’s elections were attacked and our democracy is threatened.

“I recommend Congressman Brat take stock of the statements made by the Republicans who have stood up to defend our nation. This isn’t about party, it’s about the future of our country, and I’d recommend the compelling statement of Republican John McCain as a good place to start.”
