Eileen Bedell announced today that she has received the endorsement of Congresswoman-elect Abigail Spanberger for the Virginia State Senate seat in the 10th district. Bedell is campaigning to become the Democratic candidate to face the Republican Incumbent Glen Sturtevant in the 2019 election cycle. Hillary Clinton won this district by 12 points in 2016, and Ralph Northam won the district by 15 points in 2017. The endorsement from Spanberger is below:
Today, Congresswoman-elect Abigail Spanberger endorsed Eileen Bedell – the attorney and mother of two running for Virginia’s 10th State Senate Seat. Congresswoman-elect Spanberger cites Bedell’s experienced understanding of the Commonwealth’s legal system and her demonstrated commitment to her community in her statement of support:
“I am proud to announce my endorsement of Eileen Bedell’s candidacy to be the next State Senator for Virginia’s 10th District,” said Congresswoman-elect Spanberger. “Throughout my own campaign, I had the privilege of watching Eileen connect with voters as she knocked doors and got people excited to get out and vote. She is a strong community member, passionate advocate and local attorney who is attuned with the needs of her district. As an attorney working family law cases right here in Central Virginia, Eileen has a professional background that will inform and drive her efforts in the State Senate. I am confident that over the next year, Eileen will show voters that she will represent Virginia’s diverse 10th in the State Senate well.”
Congresswoman-elect Spanberger’s 7th Congressional District shares both Powhatan County and a large part of the critical, swing county of Chesterfield – won by Spanberger in last Tuesday’s election – with Virginia’s 10th State Senate District. Currently held by Republican Glen Sturtevant, the 10th State Senate District is seen as a top target for Democrats to flip and take back the Senate in 2019.
Since 2016, Virginia’s 10th State Senate District has shifted left by seven points with Senator Tim Kaine receiving 60% of the district’s vote this past Tuesday. Bedell’s understanding of key issues – ensuring access to affordable health care, protecting Virginia’s natural resources, enacting laws which result in common-sense gun violence prevention and investing in workforce development programs – position her as the strongest candidate to represent the voices of Virginia’s 10th in the State Senate.
“Last week, through hard work and a positive, solution-oriented message, Abigail Spanberger electrified the country and showed Virginia that progress is possible,” said Bedell. “I am honored by this endorsement, and I look forward to fighting alongside Congresswoman-elect Spanberger and the rest of Virginia’s representatives at all levels of government to create an even greater home for all Virginians.”
