Police were spotted early tonight behind a tank-like military vehicle that was stolen from Fort Pickett. The tank was spotted along Route 460 in Dinwiddie, then it was spotted on interstate 85 and interstate 95.
The driver then drove 20 miles north to the City of Richmond.
The tank-like vehicle exited interstate 95 at close to 9:30 p.m. on the Boulevard exit in Richmond. The tank then drove east down West Broad street passing the VCU campus. The driver eventually gave up and was apprehended at 11th and Broad Streets. Jon Burkett is reporting that the driver was a soldier. The vehicle is the property of the Virginia National Guard, and was never equipped with a weapon. Police on Tuesday announced charges and identified the driver as a 29 year old Richmond man. Philip Yabut has been charged with driving under the influence of drugs, felony eluding and a felony count of unauthorized use of a vehicle.
A State Police spokesperson said the vehicle never went over 40 MPH and there were no crashes from incident. The adult male driver is in state police custody as of 9:40 p.m. The spokesperson said they blocked exits along interstate 95 for the safety of the public.
Sources say the suspect is at VCU Medical Center after being tased and bitten by a dog.
