Stories of Holiday Traditions

What:              Explore the history of some of your favorite holiday traditions. Why do we place lit pine trees in our homes?  What are the origins of some favorite carols? Join us to learn the answers to these and other questions and make a holiday craft to take home.

Collecting and Preserving Your Family History

What:              Preserving your family story is more than just recording dates, names and places. The stories are the connections that make the memories of your ancestors come alive and weave together your family history. Learn tips, techniques and tools to start this important family project! Presented by Lori Purcell, central librarian, Chesterfield County Public Library.

Christmas Crafts

What:              The holidays are right around the corner. Here’s a chance to get a head start on creating some easy Christmas crafts. Make a snowman that lights up, a Christmas tree ribbon centerpiece, a paper angel and candy cane decorations.

The Outdoor Classroom – 17th Century Winter Holiday Meals

What:              Watch and participate in preparations for both English and Indian winter festivity meals as prepared 400 years ago.  From gathering crops, natural foods and herbs from our gardens to preparing the meal to making household holiday decorations — join in on these great activities!

When:             Thursday, Dec. 6, 2-4 p.m.

Club Champions League (CCL) College Showcase

What:              The fall edition of the Club Champions League (CCL) College Showcase features top youth soccer clubs from Virginia, Maryland, and Washington D.C. who will compete in front of 80+ college coaches in attendance. This event was designed for the 2,100+ youth soccer players to show off their talents in hopes of being discovered by a college coach to play at the next level.

What:              Collect new, unwrapped toys for Holiday Helper at Fort Lee and personal care items for the hospitalized veterans at McGuire Virginia Medical Center.

Three Centuries of Virginia Christmas & A Visit with Father Christmas

What:              Celebrate three centuries of Virginia Christmas at Henricus Historical Park! Begin in 1611 at Henricus Fort and see how Dutch ideas influenced English holiday traditions. Move on to 1778, when the Revolution called for simpler ways to mark the season. Next, it’s 1860: celebrate with carols and hot cider while decorating a Victorian Christmas tree by the fireside! Make sure to bring the kids! Your festive journey through time will end with a visit from Father Christmas – he’ll be there to hear everyone’s Yuletide wishes! Make your holidays historical at Henricus.

CarMax Tacky Light Run

What:              This 6k holiday-themed fun run will start and finish in Mid-Lothian Mines Park, with participants looping through the adjoining Walton Park neighborhood, to see some of the most festive homes in the community. The event truly illuminates Chesterfield County to all in attendance as we continue to enjoy the RVA tradition of “tacky” holiday lights.

Fit Warriors: Every day is the Best Day!

What:              Let’s have some fun and get fit! This class is for everyone and accommodates all fitness levels. Come out on Tuesday evenings to enjoy an action packed fun workout. With the support and partnership of Sports Backers, Fit to Go, and Richmond City Health District, this is a free class that provides a total body workout with functional cardio, strength building, flexibility and core exercises. Classes are led by Sports Backers Fitness Warrior Chantel Turner aka C.T.

Christmas Magic

What:              Try something different for the holiday. Join us for an interactive Christmas illusion and magic show. Mickey and friends will be here to entertain you for this fun, family experience. Jack the Bunny may even make an appearance. Light refreshments will be served. Open to the first 60 who register by Nov. 15.

Pickleball (Rotation Play)

What:              This fast-growing sport is a combination of tennis, badminton and ping-pong played on a badminton sized court. Pickleball is played with a perforated plastic ball and wooden, composite, or graphite paddle. We will play, Rotation Play which is organized play where players line their paddles up. Space is limited on the mezzanine to one court and one dink court.

Introduction to Digital Photography with Phones and Tablets

What:              In this course, we’ll show you how to use lighting, composition and your camera’s settings to take better digital photos. Learn to take photos with smart phones and tablets and learn 10 everyday uses for your phone’s camera. Please register early and in advance. Instructed by Thinking Cap Technologies. What:              This is an introduction to smartphones. Learn what they do, how to turn it on and off, how to access Wi-Fi, about the settings and how to install applications. Introduction to Texting, Twitter and Snapchat

What:              Learn how to communicate with friends and family using texting, as well as the social network Twitter. You will also be introduced to a fun, popular application called Snapchat, which is used to send temporary messages, pictures and short videos. You must have knowledge of turning the computer/tablet on and off, accessing wi-fi, settings and applications/programs.

Winter Lecture Series Presented by the Chesterfield Historical Society

First Day Bike Ride at Dutch Gap

What:              Spend the first day of January biking and exploring the Dutch Gap Conservation Area. This will be an easy five-mile ride cruising along bottomlands, meadows, and around the Tidal Lagoon. Stop at the Peninsula for a warm mug of cocoa before heading back. Mountain bikes or hybrid bikes are recommended. Bike helmets are required. Trial is suitable for bike trailers.

First Day Hike at Rockwood Park

What:              Spend the first day of January hiking and exploring the wilds of Rockwood Park. Join us for an easy ramble exploring the old ice pit, Falling Creek, Gregory’s Pond, the edge of the swamp and upland forest. Afterwards, stop at Rockwood Nature Center for a warm mug of cocoa and to view the exhibits and live animals.
