The Democratic Party of Virginia just released the following:
SALEM, VA – Community leader Carter Turner of Salem will be the Democratic nominee in the November 6th special election to fill the recently vacated seat in the Virginia House of Delegates 8th District.
Following Virginia Democrats’ historic gains in the House of Delegates in the 2017 election, and the recent Democratic resurgence in special elections across the country, Roanoke Valley Democrats are eager to capitalize on this unique opportunity to even the House of Delegates to 50/50.
Turner, who has lived in Roanoke County since he was 7 years old, worked as an Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Radford University for nearly a decade and now serves as their Associate Director of Advancement.
“I am committed to empowering the people in my home community – especially those who have been left behind in our complex economy. We need to create tools and resources to improve lives – including expanded broadband and affordable higher education options,” said Turner. “I am a strong advocate for expanding Interstate-81 in the Roanoke Valley and believe Virginia needs to take bold steps to address the opioid crisis, expand healthcare to all individuals and protect women’s reproductive rights.”
Senator John Edwards also voiced his strong support for Turner’s candidacy, “Carter Turner is part of a new generation of leaders who are moved to public service to genuinely benefit their community,” said State Senator John Edwards. “He is exactly what the people of the 8th District need, and I know Carter will stand up to represent this region in Richmond and help move the whole Commonwealth forward.”
Press is invited to join Carter Turner tomorrow at his campaign kick-off rally.
