At a joint fundraiser of the Prince William County Democrats and the Manassas Park and Manassas Cities Democrats, Iraq War veteran Josh King of Dumfries tonight announced his candidacy for Prince William County Sheriff.
King, who has served as a Deputy Sheriff in Fairfax County for 11 years, is the first Democrat to run for the office in 15 years.
“Prince William County is increasingly diverse, and we need a sheriff who is committed to ensuring all residents, including people of color, the LGBTQIA community and immigrants are treated fairly by our law enforcement officers,” said Josh King, Democratic candidate for Prince William County Sheriff. “The divisive rhetoric of the president is increasingly putting communities at risk of violence. Our law enforcement officers do great work to keep us safe, but I will strive to ensure that the Sheriff’s Office is a proactive, unifying force in the community.”
King, who served two tours of duty in Iraq before being honorably discharged in 2006, has lived in the county for the past 8 years. He and his wife Candi have three children who all attend Prince William County public schools.
Hillary Clinton decisively won Prince William County in 2016, while Democrat Jackie Smith upset former Delegate Jackson Miller , then the House Republican Whip, in the Prince William County Clerk of Court race last year by eight points, despite being outraised six to one .
Democrats picked up five Prince William County seats in the House of Delegates last year. Delegate Tim Hugo is now the only Republican in the House of Delegates with any Prince William County precincts in his district. He held onto his seat by only 99 votes .
