RICHMOND, VA – Tonight, Dr. Ghazala Hashmi won the Democratic Primary for Virginia’s 10th Senate District. Dr. Hashmi will face Republican incumbent Senator Glen Sturtevant in November, in what many view as the best pick up opportunity Democrats have in the state senate.
“I am truly humbled by the support that so many people across the 10th district have shown my campaign,” said Dr. Hashmi. “I want to thank Eileen Bedell and Zachary Brown for running strong campaigns about issues important to Central Virginia. Our campaign and our community is stronger because of their contributions to this election. I also want to thank all of the amazing supporters, volunteers, friends, and family who have been with us every step of the way throughout this journey. From the beginning, our campaign has been sustained by the efforts of so many people, and I have such gratitude for all of their hard work and support.
“I’m running for this seat because the people of the 10th District need a senator who is committed to the idea that education is a public good, and it deserves to be funded more, not less; they also deserve a senator who knows that access to affordable, quality healthcare is a right for everyone, not just a privilege for the wealthy few, and who isn’t afraid to stand up to special interests so that we can pass common sense gun safety reforms.”
Democrats in Virginia only need to gain one seat in the senate to win control of the chamber, and Sturtevant is widely viewed as the most vulnerable GOP incumbent. Last year Senator Tim Kaine won the 10th District by 24 points.
