GLEN ALLEN, VA — Today, the 2016 7th Congressional District Democratic nominee, Eileen Bedell, endorsed Abigail Spanberger’s bid for the 2018 Democratic nomination. In October of 2017, Bedell suspended her campaign for the 2018 nomination, and has now announced her full support of Spanberger’s efforts to unseat Representative Brat.
“I am excited to endorse Abigail Spanberger for the Democratic nomination in Virginia’s 7th Congressional District” said Bedell. “Ms. Spanberger’s experience as a public servant combined with her knowledge and understanding of the changing demographics and diverse interests of a wide-ranging district like the 7th make her the best choice, from any party, for Central Virginians.”
During her 2016 campaign, Bedell, an attorney and Chesterfield resident, ran a strong campaign with far-reaching grassroots support. As a result, she garnered more votes than any recent Democratic challengers in the newly-redrawn Central Virginia district. Her energized supporters stretched from Culpeper to Nottoway, and represented every county in between.
“Eileen worked incredibly hard last year and ultimately laid the foundation for a Democrat to be successful in 2018,” said Spanberger. “Her determination to bring better representation to the 7th showed Virginians in our district that good leadership is worth fighting for. I am grateful for all of her work supporting strong Democratic candidates, at every level of government, and I am truly appreciative that she has chosen to endorse my candidacy. I thank Eileen for her commitment to electing leaders who are dedicated to serving our communities and willing to fight for them both at home and in Washington.”
Bedell’s endorsement adds to a growing list of former candidates who have publicly backed Spanberger’s campaign. In September, the 2014 Democratic nominee in VA-7 Jack Trammell officially endorsed. In August, professor Kim Gower and former 2018 primary opponent also announced her support of Spanberger.
