HOPEWELL, VA. – The City of Hopewell Recreation and Parks Department will host Fireworks on the Appomattox on Saturday, June 30, beginning at 9:30 p.m. Fireworks will be detonated from a barge on the Appomattox River, positioned between the Hopewell City Marina and historic City Point. The display can be viewed from three public viewing areas: the Hopewell City Marina, the John Randolph Medical Center rear parking lot, and City Park.
Viewing from Land
Limited parking will be available at the Hopewell City Marina. Parking will be available in the main lot of the marina and in the field adjacent to the pavilion. The pavilion and fishing pier will be closed during the event. Some vantage points at the marina may be obstructed by the State Route 10 bridge. Street parking will also be available in the vicinity of the marina in designated areas.
The John Randolph Medical Center will serve as the main viewing area and will offer the best vantage point for the fireworks display. No event parking will be permitted on hospital property. Ample street parking will be available adjacent to the hospital in the vicinity of 5th Avenue, 4th Avenue, 3rd Avenue, Cawson Street, and throughout the surrounding area. Event patrons should use caution not to block driveways, alleys or fire hydrants. Public safety officials will be positioned along Randolph Road to assist with pedestrian traffic. Please use designated crosswalk areas. Regular hospital operations will not be impacted by the event. Hospital visitors should use the parking area closest to the main hospital entrance on Eppes Street. Smoking is not permitted on the hospital campus. Please refrain from using all tobacco or vape products while at the event.
Limited parking will be available at City Park. The display can be viewed from the wooded beach area of the park. The fishing pier will be closed during the event. This viewing location should not be used by persons with mobility limitations.
Viewing by Water
The Hopewell City Marina boat ramp will remain open during the event. During barge anchoring, a 100-foot safety perimeter will be maintained around the barge. Beginning at 8:30 p.m., marine patrols will strictly enforce a 1,000-foot safety perimeter around the barge during the event. The 1,000-foot safety perimeter will be marked at either end of the channel with yellow buoys. Boaters should refrain from anchoring within the 1,000-foot safety perimeter at any time. The navigable channel will be closed under United States Coast Guard regulation from 9:00-10:00 p.m.
The general public should expect heavy traffic in the area of John Randolph Medical Center and the Hopewell City Marina from 8:00-10:30 p.m. Thru traffic should use the posted detour off 6th Avenue and Winston Churchill Drive to avoid traffic congestion caused by the event. Alcoholic beverages are not permitted at any of the public viewing locations. Trash should be disposed of properly in refuse containers. Please respect private property and observe all parking and traffic restrictions during the event.
