John Keohane, has been the Police Chief in Hopewell for 7 years. On top of that he has 35 total years in law enforcement. He just announced that he will be retiring from his post effective August 1.
“Certainly he will be a loss for us,” City Manager March Altman said of Keohane’s retirement. “He has made some great improvements, I believe, in the community. I knew when I took the job that it would be a year or two at the most,” Altman said. “I was hoping a little bit longer on that side, but I do respect his decision and support him fully.”
Altman does not anticipate that Hopewell will have someone to fill those shoes by Keohane’s departure date. They will begin the process of hiring and interviewing candidates for the position.
“I’m hoping to have [a police chief] in place soon thereafter, as soon as possible,” Altman said, “but we need to make sure we go through a good process, get good candidates and ultimately pick the right candidate, the right individual to lead our department. … I’m a big believer in hiring the best person for the job.”
