ICYMI: Washington Cuts Jay Gruden

By Jakob Vaughan

Washington Redskins head coach, Jay Gruden, reportedly did not want to draft rookie quarterback, Dwayne Haskins. Gruden wanted to draft Daniel Jones or Drew Lock over Haskins in the 2019 NFL Draft. Dwayne Haskins reportedly has sensed Jay Gruden dislikes him. Gruden named Colt McCoy their starting quarterback, Friday afternoon. Earlier that week the Redskins promoted wide receiver, Cam Sims to their official 53-man active roster. Washington’s veteran tight ends, Vernon Davis and Jordan Reed did not play against the Patriots, due to concussions. Redskins former starting quarterback, Case Keenum was listed as inactive for Sunday’s game.

Redskins started their Week 5 matchup against the Patriots with a 7-0 lead, handing the Patriots their first deficit of the season. After the Redskins first touchdown the Patriots didn’t look back, as they scored 33 unanswered points to improve to 5 and 0 with a 33 to 7 victory. Patriots quarterback, Tom Brady thought it was “ridiculous” how many Patriots fans were in FedEx Field. Redskins fell to 0 and 5 with a new quarterback at the helm of the team, Colt McCoy, who completed 18 of his 27 passes for 119 yards and an interception. Rookie WR Terry McLaurin was active, after missing last week and caught 3 passes for 51 yards.

After dropping to 0 and 5 on the season Jay Gruden said “If the key works Monday, I’ll keep working” during the post-game press conference. Jay Gruden had a combined 35 and 49 and 1 record during his 6-year span as the team’s head coach. Jay Gruden was fired Monday morning after a 0 and 5 start to their season full of quarterback controversy. Redskins owner, Dan Snyder and president, Bruce Allen called Jay Gruden to the team facility at 5am on Monday to fire him. Redskins promoted offensive line and assistant coach, Bill Callahan as their interim head coach. Redskins will potentially promote offensive coordinator, Kevin O’Connell to head coach, after the 2019 season. Dan Snyder is interested in hiring Chiefs offensive coordinator, Eric Bieniemy, Steelers head coach, Mike Tomlin, or Buccaneers defensive coordinator, Todd Bowles as the new head coach. Washington’s president, Bruce Allen said the team has no intent of trading star left tackle, Trent Williams, who continues to hold out.

The Washington Redskins travel to Miami to play the Dolphins on Sunday. Both teams are 0 and 5 on the season and have struggled at the quarterback position. The Miami Dolphins have reportedly been tanking this season by trading away players. Redskins have their quarterback of the future, Dwayne Haskins, but need new ownership to lead Washington. This Sunday in Miami one team will leave with their 1st win of the season in Week 6 at 1pm.
