Show This To Everyone

Richmond, Va. (March 12, 2019) – As the April 15 tax filing deadline approaches, United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg continues to offer its free tax preparation services at Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites across the region.

United Way’s VITA program provides free tax preparation and financial guidance to families and individuals earning $55,000 or less. About 950 people have filed taxes at VITA sites since operations began on January 29.

United Way’s team of IRS-certified volunteer tax preparers assist taxpayers with completing and electronically filing their federal and state returns. United Way also uses the program to provide financial advice that helps taxpayers with ways to save, financial best practices and plans for achieving financial independence. It also helps eligible taxpayers take advantage of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), a tax-saving benefit for those with low to moderate income.

There are 15 VITA sites across Richmond, Hanover County, Henrico County, Chesterfield County, Charles City, Goochland County and Petersburg.

“Our tax assistance program promotes financial stability and well-being, one of United Way’s nine Steps to Success,” said James Taylor, President & CEO of United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg. “For more than 15 years, we’ve been able to help low-to moderate-income families save money through their tax refund by taking advantage of the Earned Income Tax Credit. By working with United Way, clients are able to receive their full refund without paying fees for tax preparations services and refund anticipation loans.”

In 2018, local United Way volunteers helped more than 3,400 households with tax preparation. A total of $837,573 in EITC funds was distributed by the IRS to families who took advantage of the service.

VITA locations across Greater Richmond and Petersburg are open at different times and days in order to accommodate a variety of schedules. Find more information at https://www.yourunitedway.org/tax/A list of sites with operating times is provided below.
