Today, Jenefer Hughes, Commissioner of Revenue for Chesterfield County, endorsed Abigail Spanberger’s bid for the 2018 Democratic nomination in Virginia’s 7th Congressional District. Hughes’ endorsement joins a growing list of elected leaders within the 7th District supporting Spanberger’s candidacy for the U.S House of Representatives.
“Abigail Spanberger is the type of leader we need for the 7th District,” said Hughes. “She is committed to working every day to improve the lives of central Virginians. Her ability to bridge divides, listen and understand the issues that matter, and work towards meaningful solutions will serve the residents of the 7th well in Congress. I enthusiastically endorse her candidacy.”
Hughes, whose county seat overlaps with the 7th Congressional District, turned a Republican-held seat Democratic by defeating an incumbent last November by more than 11 points. Additionally, Hughes is also the first Democrat to win a countywide seat in Chesterfield County in 37 years. Her resounding victory confirmed the shifting tide of the 7th, and reinforced the likelihood of success for the Spanberger campaign.
Spanberger offered her appreciation for Hughes’ support. “As part of the new wave of first-time Democratic women running for office, I’m especially proud to receive Jenefer’s endorsement,” said Spanberger. “Our campaign is inspired and motivated, and her victory last year is proof that we can and will flip the 7th District in November.”
Hughes’ support adds to a growing list of national organizations and 7th District leaders supporting Spanberger. EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest resource for Democratic women in politics, and End Citizens United, a grassroots organization dedicated to reforming our campaign finance system, have endorsed Spanberger’s candidacy. Additionally, Moms Demand Action recognized Spanberger as a “Gun Sense Candidate” and NewDemPAC added her to their ‘Candidate Watch List.’ In March, Spanberger received endorsements from three House of Delegates members whose seats overlap with the 7th District as well as seven current and former Democratic committee chairs.
Abigail Spanberger is a proud Democrat and former CIA officer running for Congress against Dave Brat in Virginia’s 7th Congressional District.
