HOPEWELL –Saturday, March 6 at 8AM, Keep Hopewell Beautiful, city employees, and city residents conducted a major clean-up of the 3200, 3300, 3400, and 3500 blocks of Western Street.
Over 30 volunteers (1/3 of which were children and young adults) came out on the cold, brisk morning to help clean-up and beautify this heavily trashed neighborhood near the CSX railroad.
The woods on these four blocks had unfortunately become a dumping ground for trash, worn out tires, and construction debris.
Within the three hour event, approximately 1,500lbs of trash were picked up by the 30+ volunteers. 22 tires, 43 bags of trash, piles of scrap metal and other debris were removed from the woods.
With the estimated cost of a public works crew member at $18/hour, the volunteers saved the City of Hopewell over $1,600 in time, labor, and resources. By removing the trash from the woods, not only did the volunteers help beautify the neighborhood, they had a positive impact by improving the ecological health of the neighborhood woods.
The clean-up event ended with Keep Hopewell Beautiful grilling hotdogs for the volunteers for lunch as a way to thank them for all of their hard work and dedication that morning.
The next KHB project will be a beautification enhancement of Woodlawn Playground on Saturday, April 1st from 8AM-11AM. Keep Hopewell Beautiful and volunteers will be planting trees, flowers, and shrubs. We will also assist with some park enhancements, debris removal, and picking up trash in the surrounding neighborhood. If you are interested in volunteering at the next beautification project, Keep Hopewell Beautiful will meet at Woodlawn Playground Park at 8AM.
Keep Hopewell Beautiful is also giving away 2017 calendars that showcase art work from students in the Hopewell City Public School System. If you would like a free calendar they can be picked up in the City’s Planning Department in City Hall and/or the Hopewell/Prince George Visitor’s Center.
Keep Hopewell Beautiful is also actively seeking new members. If you would like to join Keep Hopewell Beautiful or volunteer with the organization, please feel free to contact Horace Wade at 804-541-2221.
