What Dunnavant Has Done

Public school funds for private schools On January 11, 2017:

Dr. Dunnavant introduced her bill SB1243, which would have created “Parental Choice Education Savings Accounts.” Dunnavant’s bill would have transferred a portion of all state education funds paid to a school district into these accounts to be used by parents “for certain education-related expenses of the student, including tuition, deposits, fees, and required textbooks at a private, sectarian or nonsectarian elementary or secondary school or preschool that is located in the Commonwealth and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, or national origin.” This bill would have had the Commonwealth funding the full cost of a private school education for those parents who asked. Fortunately, the doctor’s bill did not pass the Senate. If Senator Dunnavant claims she supports public education, remind her of this bill.

What Dunnavant Has Done

Most people don’t appreciate what it means that Dunnavant belongs to ALEC. Here are the facts:

American Legislative Exchange Council

In 2018, Senator Dunnavant used her reelection campaign fund to pay $100 for dues in the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). (Source: VPAP)

ALEC whose motto is “Limited Government, Free Markets, Federalism”, is an association of conservative state legislators and corporate representatives that work to draft and get enacted legislation favoring corporate and other conservative interests. ALEC has produced model state legislation to generally reduce state regulations, reduce state taxation, combat undocumented immigrants, eliminate environmental regulation, tighten voter identification laws, weaken labor unions, and oppose gun control. A former national chairman of ALEC has defined it as a “very, very conservative organization.” (Sources: Wikipedia, alecexposed)
