Dinwiddie Sherriff’s deputies are investigating a homicide on Route 1. We reported earlier this week that they were investigating a suspicious death, which was later confirmed as a homicide that they were investigating. Police received the call around 3 a.m.

Police have identified Umar Abdus Salaam of Petersburg as the victim. He was pronounced dead at Southside Regional Medical Center.

The people have been arrested after a father was shot and killed early Wednesday morning outside of a car wash that he owned for almost a year.

On Friday, three people were arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit murder:

  • Thornell Sledge, 24, of Petersburg,
  • Caleb Q. Smith, 25, of Newport News
  • Jhanae Short, 18, of Petersburg

They’re being held without bond on Meherrin River Regional Jail in Alberta.
