Police identify couple killed in crash

Tuesday at approximately 1:43 p.m., the Virginia State Police responded to a two vehicle crash with two confirmed fatalities at northbound Route 1, south of Cedon Road.

The trooper’s preliminary investigation reveals that a 2000 Nissan Altima, driven by, George W. Morris, 38, of Sprotsylvania, Va., was traveling southbound in the far right lane on Route 1, when he veered across two lanes of travel, striking a 2015 Ford F550 VDOT work truck head on as it was traveling northbound in the far right lane.
Unfortunately, George Morris succumbed to his injuries at the scene.  A front seat passenger identified as, Kelly F. Morris, 36, of Spotsylvania, Va. also succumbed to her injuries at the scene.  There were no other injuries reported.

The crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the Virginia State Police Crash Reconstruction Team.

Aspokesperson for VDOT released the following statement:

“A Virginia Department of Transportation vehicle was involved in a multi-vehicle crash on Route 1 today in Caroline County. A VDOT employee driving the vehicle and a VDOT employee riding as a passenger were not injured.

 

The crash investigation will be led by the Virginia State Police. VDOT will work closely with Virginia State Police to share any information needed to thoroughly investigate this crash and its cause.

 

Our workforce strives each day to make our highways safe for travel, and this tragic loss of two individuals on a state roadway is cause for tremendous sadness. Any death from a motor vehicle crash is one death too many. ”
