Police Are Increasing Patrols on Chippenham to Deter Reckless Driving

Aggressive driving, speeding and following too closely, all problems Chesterfield police say they see every day on the Chippenham Parkway.

Now officers from Chesterfield are stepping up enforcement after several crashes along the busy road.

“The drivers, I mean, they are always speeding,” said Tanya Felder, who drives on Route 150 at least three times a week.

Felder says careless, even reckless drivers, are a constant worry for her.

“I refuse to drive so close because you never know when someone is going to stop because of someone in front of them. Then it’s going to be a chain reaction,” said Felder.

That is exactly why Chesterfield police are teaming up with Richmond, Henrico and state police to increase patrols on Chippenham in an effort put the brakes on dangerous driving.

A major problem is tailgating, police say.

Just last week, a Chesterfield police vehicle was struck on the parkway during a traffic stop, when a passing car couldn’t move over because another vehicle was too close behind them.

Since January 1, 2016, Virginia State Police and Chesterfield police have responded to 188 reported crashes just on Chippenham.

Those figures don’t surprise Thomas Exley, who says he’s on Chippenham multiple times each day.

“Just a congested area, getting on the ramp getting on the Powhite,” said Exley. “In the morning, people rushing not really paying attention.”

While officers will be patrolling the parkway in the coming days, they want to remind drivers to always be aware of their surroundings, slow down and move over.
