Rep. Dave Brat, chairman of the Constitution Caucus, released the following statement commemorating September 17th, Constitution Day.
“America’s written Constitution is evidence of the unparalleled political genius of our founders. They understood humans were capable of great things if they worked towards the common good. But, sometimes, certain corrupt factions would arise and, if left to their own devices, would chase selfish ambitions without regard to the common good. And so, they devised a system of checks and balances so that human corruption could not get a foothold within American government.
“It is our job to ensure the genius of the Constitution is understood and appreciated for our children and our children’s children. We must communicate why we must all diligently work to serve and protect this system of government. For years, I had the privilege of teaching about our American government to college students at Randolph-Macon College. But, now, as a member of Congress, I have a new mission to protect it.
“With that calling in mind, I chose to re-launch the Congressional Constitution Caucus this year. I re-launched the caucus so that lawmakers – our nation’s leaders – would be reminded of their role within the broader context of American government.”
