Richmond is one of the top 25 U.S. cities with the highest murder rates in the country, according to a study by 24/7 Wall St.
Richmond ranked 19th on the list, with a murder rate of 19.5 per 100,000 people, and a violent crime rate of 515.8 per 100,000. In comparison, Chicago has a murder rate of 17.5 per 100,000 people, despite a catastrophic level of gun violence on its streets
24/7 Wall St. cites poor economic conditions as the main cause for Richmond, noting that “about one in four residents live below the poverty line, a far larger share than the 15.6% national poverty rate.”
Richmond had 43 murders in 2015 – more than half remain unsolved.
