Virginia House of Delegates Speaker Kirk Cox announced Friday a planned schedule for the Special Election in the 24th House of Delegates District, which will be vacated by Congressman-elect Ben Cline. Cline sent a letter Wednesday notifying the Speaker of his intent to resign effective December 18th.

“As you know,  yesterday I was elected to serve the people of Virginia’s Sixth Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives. Pending the certification of the results of yesterday’s election,I hereby announce my intention to resign from the Virginia House of Delegates effective December 18, 2018.”

The 24th district is located west of Charlottesville and north of Lynchburg. Cline won 72% of the vote in 2017 over his Democratic challenger John Winfrey.

Because the House of Delegates is currently in session, the Speaker has the authority to issue writs of election for vacancies that may occur. Speaker Cox intends to issue on Tuesday, November 13th a Writ of Election for a Special Election to occur on Tuesday, December 18th.

“Delegate Ben Cline has been a leader in the House of Delegates and I know he will continue to be a leader while serving in Congress,” said Speaker Kirk Cox (R-Colonial Heights). “To give the next Delegate from the 24th District as much time as possible to prepare for the upcoming session, and to ensure that the people of the 24th District are represented for the entire 2019 session, I am calling a special election for December 18th.”

Cox added, “While we have often scheduled special elections for the first week of January, this year’s calendar and Delegate Cline’s offer to step down early affords us the opportunity to have a special election sooner. This is very efficient and practical timeline.”
