We have some college basketball out of the A-10 on Friday night, as the Dayton Flyers visit the VCU Rams.
The Dayton Flyers will be looking for a win to maintain their spot at the top of the A-10 standings after a 6-1 start to conference play. The Flyers made it 3 wins in a row with a 67-46 blowout win over Saint Louis. Scoochie Smith led the way for Dayton with 6 makes on 9 attempts from the floor with 5 triples. Flyers’ leading scorer this season, Charles Cooke, came 2nd with 15 points to go along with game-high totals of 9 rebounds and 6 assists. Kendall Pollard chipped in 9 points and 3 blocks, while Ryan Mikesell added 3 steals in the winning effort. Cooke leads Dayton with an average of 17.8 points per game, while Smith is the team’s top assist man, dishing out 3.6 assists and Mikesell leads the team on the glass with 4.7 boards per game. As a team, Dayton is scoring 75 points per game on 46.2% shooting from the field, 36.8% from behind the arc and 67.8% from the foul line this season.
The VCU Rams will be looking for a big A-10 win of their own to pull even with the Flyers in the conference standings as they sit at 5-2 in conference play. The Rams bounced back from back-to-back losses with a 90-52 beatdown of La Salle in their last outing. Justin Tillman led the team with 16 points on 7 of 10 shooting from the field, falling just 1 rebound shy of the double-double. Leading scorer for the Rams this season, JeQuan Lewis, came 2nd with 15 points on 6 of 8 shooting with 3 triples and a share of the game-high with 5 assists. Samir Doughty also added 15 points of his own while Ahmed Hamdy-Mohamed chipped in 13 points ,11 rebounds and a pair of blocks for the double-double. Jordan Burgess scored 10 points with a pair of triples, while Mo Alie-Cox added a pair of blocks himself. Lewis leads the team with an average of 14.8 points and 4.8 assists per game this season, while Tillman is the team’s leading rebounder with 7.6 rebounds per game. As a team, VCU is scoring 75.6 points per game on 47.8% shooting from the field, 35.9% from behind the arc and 70% from the foul line this season.
Dayton is 5-2 ATS in their last 7 conference matchups and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games following a win while the under is 5-0 in their last 5 games overall. VCU is 22-9 ATS in their last 31 conference matchups and 25-12 ATS in their last 37 games following a win while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 games overall. The road team has covered the spread in each of the last 4 meetings between these two teams.
Although VCU is a solid team, they haven’t really played and of the top-tier competition in the A-10. Dayton already has a road win over a very good St. Bonaventure team that will probably one of the top 4 seeds in the A-10 tournament, and could pull off another win here. In a matchup that’s seen the success go the way of the visitor, I’ll back Dayton in a game the Flyers could win outright.
