The Virginia Democratic Ticket Responds to Trump Declaring
Public Health Emergency for Opioid Epidemic
ARLINGTON, Virginia– Today, Donald Trump declared the nation’s opioid epidemic to be a “public health emergency.”
Lt. Governor Northam, Attorney General Herring, and Justin Fairfax issued the following joint statement in response:
“While we had hoped this declaration would come sooner, late action is better than no action at all. We are encouraged by this step, but in order to end this epidemic, additional resources are required. An emergency declaration has to be met with proper resources and funding to ensure people have access to treatment for their addiction.
“Trump’s declaration did not happen in a vacuum. Thousands of people across the country have worked tirelessly to bring attention to this issue. We petitioned the president for an even stronger declaration of a national state of emergency earlier this month, and yesterday we went on a tour across the Commonwealth highlighting this crisis. We are glad that the president heard our asks for the people of Virginia and as the next administration to lead Virginia, we will make sure he is held accountable and continue to fight for additional resources to address the challenge.”
