(Richmond, VA) – On April 4-6, Richmond will serve as host to 700 students who comprise of the 2019 All-Virginia Band, Chorus and Orchestra ensembles. Performances will take place on Saturday, April 6 at the Dominion Energy Center for the Performing Arts. Concerts begin at 11 a.m. with the Concert Band, and last throughout the day until 3:45 p.m. Selected through a highly competitive audition process, there are five total ensembles who will be playing over the weekend: Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Orchestra, Treble Choir and Mixed Choir. Approximately 300 music teachers, who are members of the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association, and the Virginia Choral Directors Association, will be in attendance. All of the teachers in attendance are also members of the Virginia Music Educators Association. Dr. James Lane, the Virginia Superintendent for Public Instruction will address the students and teachers attending at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 4 at the Greater Richmond Convention Center, Ballroom B21B.
Students will be rehearsing in the Richmond Marriott and the Greater Richmond Convention Center and will have the opportunity to work with highly regarded guest conductors who will prepare them for the performance. Students also can attend a college fair and visit representatives from seventeen colleges and universities to learn about their music programs and performing ensembles During the weekend, teachers will have the opportunity to attend professional development sessions.
