The Senate passed a bill yesterday to defund Planned Parenthood

The Senate on Tuesday narrowly passed a bill to curtail funding for Planned Parenthood and other health centers that perform abortions.

The Senate voted 20-19 along party lines in favor of HB 2264, sponsored by Del. Benjamin Cline, R-Amherst.

The bill states that the Virginia Department of Health “shall not enter into a contract with, or make a grant to, any entity that performs abortions that are not federally qualified abortions or maintains or operates a facility where non-federally qualified abortions are performed.”  See the full story.

Nonviolent felons could become gun owners

Legislation moving through the General Assembly could restore some gun rights to nonviolent felons in Virginia.

On a 94-4 vote Tuesday, the House of Delegates passed SB 1533, which would allow nonviolent felons to own “antique firearms.”

The bill proposed by Sen. Mark Obenshain, R-Harrisonburg, would let nonviolent felons own, transport and carry antique firearms and black powder in a quantity not exceeding five pounds.

The firearms can be used solely for sporting, recreational or cultural purposes such as hunting or Civil War re-enactments.  See the full story.

Brandon Hurtado’s new album, Buried In Rain, is coming out on Chicago’s Lillerne Tapes! Buried in Rain was recorded mid-summer to early winter of 2016, and has been described as “Like a pretty ambient tape and some lost Codeine cassette melded together and got eaten by a car stereo.” Somber and maybe lethargic.

Come celebrate it’s release with Rachel (Gemtone), Brandon, and one other local friend to be announced. Tapes of the new album will be available to buy, along with a few older releases. Hope to see you.
